Presentation of the Fertilisers Action Plan (debate)
Madam President, Dear Commissioner Hansen! Europe is in a crisis, as we have heard for a long time, and now – it seems to me – a permanent crisis. And our farmers? You're right in the middle of it. The war in Ukraine and now the Iran conflict: It threatens our agriculture. With the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, fertiliser prices have skyrocketed, sometimes up to 50%. For the 2027 harvest, there is a risk of declining harvest volumes. We've just heard it: The cultivation is reduced, supply bottlenecks and a price explosion on the supermarket shelf. This morning, farmers protested in front of the European Parliament. Farmers also came from my native Bavaria, and I spoke to them. The message was clear: We need affordable fertilizers and a secure supply. Thank you, Christophe, for recognizing the situation and quickly providing a detailed action plan. At important points, for example in financing, however, it remains unfortunately still inconceivable. This gap will probably only be filled in the coming months. But this summer will be a summer of decisions. The measures must reach us farmers and, above all, the fields. We can still set the course, otherwise tomorrow's lack of fertilizer will turn into the hunger of the day after tomorrow.
