EU governance under pressure – institutional responses to global challenges (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen! What is the EU's business model at this time? I recall the Montanunion, the European Coal and Steel Community, which should bind France and Germany together so that Germany does not go to war again; the Treaties of Rome, which prepared the common market; then the 1960s, the expansion into the European Community, the customs union; the Single Act 1986, the preparation for the internal market; then 1992/1994 Maastricht, EU citizenship, Economic and Monetary Union; then the eastward enlargement, and in 2009 Lisbon with the business model ‘a stronger European Parliament and stronger institutions’. But what is the business model of the European Union today? We are not prepared for the Putins, for the Trumps, for the Xis at this time that are throwing the world into disarray. For me, it is quite clear: The 21st century should become a century for the European Union – the European Union as a safe haven for all those who do not want to work with the world's autocrats!
