Presentation of the Fertilisers Action Plan (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner! Locations of favour in Europe also mean responsibility for our food sovereignty. Regions with fertile soils, sufficient rainfall and high profitability must be used responsibly for food production. We must be clear: If we do not find a viable solution to the massive rise in fertiliser prices, EU food will become significantly more expensive. Especially in geopolitically uncertain times, a secure food supply of one's own is of strategic importance. It is also inexplicable to European farmers that they have to meet ever higher requirements, while at the same time trade agreements such as Mercosur enter into force provisionally and after only two weeks there are questions about compliance with central production standards in Brazil. This is precisely why we need to strengthen European agriculture, for example through competitive energy prices and the targeted use of available gas for domestic fertiliser production and for the preservation and expansion of European production capacities. Europe's security of supply begins with our local farmers.
