Situation of women and girls in Afghanistan following the Taliban's adoption of the Criminal Procedure Code for Courts
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, strange schizophrenia sometimes than that of the European Union, which seems to discover that Afghanistan is a land of Islam and is moved by the status of women, which has been clearly defined by Sharia law for more than 1600 years. French soldiers defended France and Europe from the murderous passion of religious fanaticism to the heart of the ‘cemetery of empires’. In order to ensure that their commitment, sometimes at the cost of their lives, is not in vain, we must fight here, albeit of a different nature, but with the same sense of duty. Because yes, ladies and gentlemen, in the conduct of our operations, we must go further than statements of which the Taliban will make little mention. We have to do something different. As Europeans, we must also first and foremost address the plight of European women by avoiding massive imports of a culture that views women as second-class citizens. Finally, political reason requires us to promote our cultural heritage and our civilisation, which has given the world of Geneviève de Galard, Jeanne d’Arc and Blanche de Castille exceptional female figures.
