Need for an adaptation of the EU legal framework on sustainable biofuels (debate)
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, in Brussels biofuels are the poor parent of the energy transition. So if, with my group, we insisted that this debate should take place, it is because these alternative fuels have, among other advantages, to reduce the price at the pump, to reduce our imports of fossil fuels and to lower our carbon emissions. Committed to the principles of technological neutrality, we call for an adaptation of the Renewable Energy Directive, which gives priority to intermittent energy at the expense of biofuels, which are limited to 7%. We also call for the Fuel Quality Directive to be corrected in order, in particular, to allow E20 blends. Finally, not including first-generation biofuels in the proposal for CO2 emission standards for cars is an ecological absurdity that we want to correct. Imagine the prospects: in France, plug-in hybrid powertrain flexfuel would equip no less than 5 million vehicles, or 13% of the vehicle fleet. That is why we need to enable Europe's biofuel industries to be competitive, viable and profitable, both for the transport sector and for the aviation sector.
