Situation of women and girls in Afghanistan following the Taliban's adoption of the Criminal Procedure Code for Courts
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, in September 2024, this House, by a very large majority and with votes from all political families, adopted a resolution denouncing gender apartheid imposed by the Taliban regime. In the same resolution, we condemned the governments that are helping to normalize their relations with the Taliban. And for good reason: we have always been outraged by the crimes committed by this regime, by all the persecutions committed against women, LGBT people, human rights defenders and all those who refuse terror and erasure. And what are we learning today? The European Commission is considering inviting Taliban representatives to discuss the return of Afghan nationals, thus carrying out a form of diplomatic normalisation. What a shame! What a renunciation of the values and principles on which our Union is founded: the defence of human rights, equality and human dignity. This cannot be of variable geometry according to the political interests of the moment. I turn to the right of this House. You who are so quick to denounce the violence and crimes of this regime, how can you condone such a moral and human bankruptcy? And I turn to the Commission: do not sacrifice our principles in the name of an ever more cynical migration policy; Do not cross this red line, do not be guilty of this moral and political fault.
