Enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (debate)
Madam President, 49 is the number of meetings declared by the Commission with the GAFAMs since the beginning of the year; 49, that is, a meeting every two days. The Commission has had 49 occasions to say that Europe is not a digital colony of the United States, that neither Trump, Apple, Google, Meta, OpenAI and others are our masters. But no: For the time being, the Commission has not clarified anything. Yet, with the DSA and DMA, we have set our rules that are fair, transparent and protect our consumers, and the digital giants, these American giants, flout, crush and despise them. This can be seen every six months: Internet users are captive, platforms swallow their data, use it, resell it, do business, hack their attention and bend their free will, and we look. The Commission is making 49 appointments, for what result today? One year later, the first sanctions under the DMA remain only theoretical. Proceedings drag on and fines are postponed. So we say to you, Commissioner: Today, our collective submission makes victims – three: European online law, future European digital champions and the hope of rebuilding our sovereignty with them. It's time to act.
