Recommendation on smoke- and aerosol-free environments (debate)
Smoking is a deadly habit. Every year, as many as 700 000 deaths in the EU are linked to smoking. This is a devastating reality that we can no longer ignore. We need to reduce tobacco consumption. That is beyond doubt. However, the danger of smoking does not stop at the smoker himself. Second-hand smoke also has a huge impact on public health, especially among vulnerable citizens or children. That is why we must strive for safe indoor and outdoor areas where children, the elderly, pregnant women, the sick and people with disabilities are protected from second-hand smoke, whether it comes from cigarettes or vapes. This is not only to ensure that they do not inhale harmful substances, it is also a cultural and pedagogical aspect to our children. Seeing smoking, after all, does smoking. If we really want to protect our children and not fall into the trap of the tobacco lobby, we must also put an end to the proliferation of flavors in electronic cigarettes. To quit smoking, you don't need an apple or chocolate flavor. Let us therefore work together towards a tobacco-free generation by 2040, and ambitious smoke-free zones are an important part of that.
