Competition policy – annual report 2024 (debate)
We are deeply concerned about the precarious situation of the steel sector and many energy-intensive industries in Europe today. Global overcapacity, illegal state aid from China, Trump's trade war and high energy prices, due to our dependence on fossil fuels, make our industry very difficult. We expect the Commission to swiftly come forward with results-oriented actions to create a framework that supports decarbonisation and innovation and in which our industry can regain its competitiveness. This is very much needed for our economy, our transition and our jobs. We have an appropriate policy framework for this, which we can strengthen even further. And for that, we have to invest billions of public money, rightly so. However, we must expect the companies that receive these billions to actually invest them in Europe in order to continue the sustainable transition, protect local jobs and strengthen Europe's position in the world. State aid must be subject to conditions. However, nationalising the steel sector, or other sectors that need and can compete at global level, is not the solution. That is why Vooruit abstained from the oral amendment to Amendment 1.
