Need for an adaptation of the EU legal framework on sustainable biofuels (debate)
Mr President, as the price of fuel explodes and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz reveals that Europe cannot continue on the path of energy dependence, now is the time for action. We have at our disposal reliable and low-carbon energy that has, in addition, the merit of supporting agricultural incomes while contributing to our sovereignty: biofuels. Yes, bioethanol is a cheap and available alternative that does not prevent, in parallel, the gradual electrification of our car fleet. Yet, for no good reason, Brussels maintains its ban on including more ethanol in our vehicles, limited to 10% today, even though countries like Brazil have made it mandatory to incorporate a minimum of 30%. And the Commission wants to allow only 3% of thermal vehicles running on alternative fuels from 2035. A pinnacle! In short, it would be time to get out of your sweet disconnected dream, because for motorists, this bludgeoning is a real waking nightmare.
