Rights, support and protection of victims of crime (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, too many victims are facing a double penalty. First the aggression, then the test of the judicial path: interminable procedure, insufficient psychological support, unequal compensation. A victim is not an administrative record; He is a human being who needs protection, listening and reconstruction. I also commend the work that has been done, because we finally recognize the victims as real actors in the judicial process and not just witnesses. We propose a European Pillar that includes real tools: legal support, psychological assistance, enhanced protection of vulnerable groups. Security is not only measured by the number of arrests and convictions; it is also measured by our ability to rebuild the victims. But we also need to think about the imprescriptibility of certain crimes. A democracy worthy of the name must never give the impression that time protects the criminal more than the victim.
