International Roma Day - Statement by the President
Madam President, today I will talk about Roma and Sinti women and girls, because gender anti-Gypsyism, as we have just seen, is a political conflict that is at the very heart of the European Union. I want to remember today for that reason Maritza, a gypsy woman who lost her baby because while she was giving birth they covered her mouth, twisted her hands and threatened to break her head and teeth until she lost consciousness. I repeat, ladies and gentlemen, you lost your baby just because you were a Roma woman. Would you like to be treated like Maritza? The solution to this political conflict is to ensure the full political participation of the entire Roma and Sinti population. For let us not deceive ourselves, ladies and gentlemen: The threat of the return of totalitarianism affects us all. Fascism is the death of Europe. But I have hope... (end of out-of-microphone intervention).
