EU political strategy on Latin America (debate)

Madam President, Eduardo Galeano wrote that the metals snatched from the new colonial dominions of America stimulated European economic development and can even be said to have made it possible. Six centuries later, Europe still does not recognize that Latin America was not discovered, but invaded. Spain and other European powers committed enormous looting and genocide and must apologize and repair our brotherly peoples of America. Far from doing so, Europe's current relationship with Latin America remains a form of colonialism. The chains of exploitation, begun then, continue today in new forms: extractivism, debt, unequal trade agreements such as Mercosur, environmental devastation, racism or forced migration. European elites want the wealth of Latin America, but they close borders, deny rights to migrants and despise demands for social justice, food sovereignty or fair trade while promoting militarization disguised as security cooperation. And in addition, we continue to define our relationship with Latin America based on the interests of the United States, especially against China. But why do we do the dirty work of Donald Trump, responsible for coups d'état, unleashing an ethnic war with mass deportations, the illegal blockade of Cuba and attacks on the sovereignty of countries such as Colombia, Venezuela or Mexico under the excuse of drug trafficking? Aren't American pharmaceutical companies and the absence of public health primarily responsible for the fentanyl crisis? Six centuries later, Europe, submissive to Trump, warmongering, complicit in the genocide in Palestine, still believes itself to be the owner of what never belonged to it. I do not know when you will realize, Commissioner, that this is how you are digging the grave of this dying Europe. As Simon Rodriguez said, either we invent or we err.

They are women who are defending themselves and their sons and daughters from the sexist violence of their abusers. And, too often, justice, instead of protecting them, condemns mothers and puts the rights of children at risk, forcing them to live with their abusive parents who – not infrequently, as you know – take advantage of the visiting regime or coexistence to exercise violence or even to murder these children and give where it hurts the mothers the most. I believe, Commissioner, that Europe can no longer look the other way, because in order not to regret more murders we must defend protective mothers and their sons and daughters when they are alive. With his unacceptable declarations on a two-state solution, Erdoğan seeks to seal the division of Cyprus by way of fait accompli, and the European Union cannot look the other way in the face of this provocation, contrary to international law. Erdoğan’s threats add to other serious breaches of international law by Turkey – such as violations of the exclusive economic zone or the illegal opening of Varosha – and aim to undermine the efforts of Cyprus, the UN and the European Union to resume negotiations on the basis of an agreed solution. And we are concerned about Turkey's continued attempts to assimilate the Turkish Cypriot community. We owe Cyprus a firm and clear solution: an end to the illegal occupation and a federal, bizonal and bicommunal solution, with political equality. Revival of relations between Turkey and the European Union must be conditional on respect for international law and normalisation of relations with all Member States, without exception. Resilience and the need to improve the interconnection of energy grid infrastructure in the EU: the first lessons from the blackout in the Iberian Peninsula (debate)

Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the blackout has shown that we have an energy system designed to fill the pockets of an electric oligopoly that makes a clear antisocial use of the essential good that is energy. It is a shame that, while any family in Spain pays a fortune with each electricity bill, the big energy companies make historic profits of 11 billion euros in the last year alone, and that they are distributed in dividends, instead of investing them in ensuring the security of the system. The privatizations of the PP and the PSOE have been a real scam and have endangered the people through revolving doors of Felipe González, José María Aznar, Salgado, Rato. Mr President, Commissioner, you are well aware, ladies and gentlemen, that preventing the right to abortion does not mean that there is less abortion: It makes more women die aborting. That is exactly what is happening in Poland. You do not defend life, you put at risk the lives of more than half of the population, that is, women, and the institutions of Poland are exercising violence against women and are responsible for those deaths. The United Nations report is very clear: Prohibition and persecution of the right to abortion is a violation of fundamental rights and is torture. Women have the right to decide about our bodies and guaranteeing the right to abortion is not an option, it is an obligation for all Member States. Europe must also urgently ensure that Poland stops persecuting people, mainly women, who assist women who have abortions, and I think the question the Commission has to answer is whether von der Leyen is able to guarantee women's rights by having Meloni's far right inside. Socialists, greens, liberals, are part of that pact with the far right. Can that grand coalition of war guarantee the right to legal, safe and free abortion? Or are they going to tell women to keep quiet and wait for another time because now feminist rights generate noise and do not generate consensus? If the grand coalition of war opens the doors to machismo and the violation of rights, the women of Europe will be able to count on a feminist movement that will get sex education to decide, contraceptives not to abort and legal and safe abortion not to die.

Ensuring sustainable, decent and affordable housing in Europe - encouraging investment, private property and public housing programmes (debate)

Mr President, Commissioner, in Spain, since 2016, the price of rents has risen by 40%. One in three people who live on rent dedicates more than 40% of their salary to paying it, more than 60% of the salary in cities or autonomous communities such as the Balearic Islands or Madrid. Why is the price of housing skyrocketing if it is a fundamental right for citizens? Because in 2023 in Spain 80% of the purchase of buildings to rent was foreign and almost half, 44%, were purchases of investment funds. The houses are for living, but those who are buying the houses are not the people, but the vultures, who buy them to speculate and turn a right into their most succulent business. Why are they bent on building more houses if there are 11 million empty homes in Europe? Why do they not intervene in the price of housing? Why don't they tax the vulture funds that illegally hoard thousands of homes, driving up rents and drowning families? Why don't they prohibit vulture funds from buying homes? Why don't we force them to put half of the houses they illegally hoard into social rent? You would see how the price of housing goes down very quickly. Commissioner, to ensure that housing is a right, you must throw Europe's vulture funds out. You are here to guarantee rights and not to ensure that investment funds do business.
