High time to deliver on the Single Market, providing certainty and predictability for EU businesses and quality jobs (continuation of debate)
Madam President, Vice-President of the Commission, the single market is a major asset, the full potential of which we are not yet using. At European Council meetings, we often hear prime ministers say that the single market must be strengthened. But when concrete decisions are to be taken, a tsunami of counterarguments often appear from Member States. Are the phones broken or the lines cut in our national governments between the prime ministers and the ministers? You wonder, do we really want to build a stronger and more competitive Europe? The answer should of course be 'Yes, we will'. And for that we must be able to renew ourselves, to renew Europe. Europe has a single market of 450 million consumers, but we also have trade barriers corresponding to tariffs of around 45 % for manufacturing, 110 % for services. We must tear down those barriers. And today, our companies too often face 27 different legal interpretations, national gold‑plating and unnecessary administrative burden. This creates uncertainty, hampers investments and prevents new jobs from being created, and it affects the daily life of many people. So now is time to act, not just to talk.
