The International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women and the State of play on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention (continuation of debate)
It is undeniable that gender-based violence remains a terrifying reality for too many citizens in the EU. Despite the high targets set by the Commission, there are still no satisfactory concrete results. Many of the women subjected to violence are silent because they believe that the abusers will change. In fact, statistics show that 33% of women in the EU have experienced physical and/or sexual violence and 55% have been sexually harassed. So now, we, clearly and out loud, need to talk about this problem. Hundreds of lives could only be saved if we had adequate measures and implemented strong policies on domestic and gender-based violence. We must ensure the safety of women around the world by eliminating gender-based violence in its many forms in order to achieve gender equality. Violence is not unavoidable. There's an exit. One effective tool in the fight against violence against women is the Istanbul Convention. Unfortunately, Bulgaria is still one of the countries that has not ratified it. The DPS is the only party that has expressed its support for the convention from the outset. I sincerely believe that its ratification will play a key role in enabling us to eradicate violence against women and ensure full gender equality.
