Situation in Afghanistan, in particular the situation of women’s rights (debate)
The debate on the catastrophic situation of women in Afghanistan, following the sharp deterioration of the most basic rights, is representative of the mismanagement of resources for humanitarian aid by the European Commission. On 27 August 2021, I asked the same Commission about the management of EU funds after the Taliban took power, as the EU institutions had just urgently repatriated their staff and evacuated local representatives. On 12 October 2021, the President of the Commission announced a €1 billion package of additional assistance to Afghans. On 5 January 2022, Mr Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, answered my question by arguing that there was no need to worry about the use of humanitarian aid and that it would be allocated in full respect of international humanitarian principles. And now we are debating whether the Taliban will deprive girls of school or fly without a male guardian... So I wonder, is the EU indirectly funding this blatant backsliding on women’s rights and gender equality in Afghanistan?
