Presentation of the programme of activities of the Slovenian Presidency (debate)
The Slovenian Presidency promises to resolve the blockade in the talks on the New Pact on Asylum and Migration. However, this project raises a number of questions: According to reports by NGOs and other institutions such as the Fundamental Rights Agency FRA, chain pushbacks of refugees have increased under the current Slovenian government. In the EU, all Member States have signed the Geneva Convention on Refugees. It states that every asylum seeker has the right to be heard and to apply. We in the EU have long been failing to live up to these international rights of refugees. This is not only the case at the external borders, where the burden on the local authorities is increasing, but also in countries such as Austria or Slovenia, from which refugees are increasingly pushed back over the external border to Bosnia via Croatia. If, therefore, the Slovenian Presidency intends to move forward with the discussions on the New Pact, then these practices must not fall under the table. They must not be normalized or legalized. It is our task as Parliament to draw attention to such violations of fundamental rights and to insist that they be brought to an end. In this way, we will also use the time of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council to repeatedly raise the issue of how national governments deal with migration in violation of human rights.
