Mr President! But for your new Red Socks campaign, you still have to explain to me why you are working with the BSW, the hardcore communists, in Thuringia. But that may be another question. In the EU, Member States are working together to be stronger together, and the right-wing margin of Parliament wants exactly the opposite. They are divided in themselves, but in one they agree: They are nationalists. Where nationalism leads in the end, we unfortunately know. If each country thinks its own interests come first, then at some point the countries will stand against each other. The consequence: Nationalism threatens peace. Nationalists threaten all those who do not fit into their worldview. But nationalism also threatens competitiveness. The best example is Brexit. Trade with the EU has collapsed and nothing could replace it. But nationalists and right-wing extremists never come to power on their own. As a German with British roots, I say: It is irresponsible for democratic politicians to hold the far-right to the stirrup. This starts with conservatives allowing right-wing extremists to hold the stirrup, as Friedrich Merz did in the Bundestag. We in Germany – and we in Germany in particular – should know this better.

Now I hear from the right side more often: We have the free internet – and if we regulate it, it is censorship. Let me remind you: There are rules on this internet. Only by whom are they made? They are made by American oligarchs, the Chinese government and the Kremlin. These are the ones who are making the rules right now. The algorithms decide who sees what. This is not decided by democratic parliaments, nor by you. That's up to those I just mentioned. They call themselves patriots or nationalists. And you deliver the European citizens to these three groups – American oligarchs, the Chinese government and the Kremlin. Because they're making the rules right now. When we, as democratic actors, set rules here and say: Our rules are that you must not pour massive disinformation, such as the Kremlin, into our European Internet, then it is something to protect our citizens and something that urgently needs to be better implemented by the Commission.

Dear colleague Vautmans, I'm usually totally on your side, but already in normal debates we don't accept blue cards from speakers on the list – and now we have 80 speakers. So there is an exchange, there is someone from this side, there is someone from that side. Not every individual. We've already had five. We are in the European Parliament, and already that we only have 1 minute speaking time – for me, it is not a real debate. But we cannot change all of the rules according to every individual who wants to speak this time. I completely understand what you're saying, but with 80 speakers on the list, if every one of you then also takes blue cards, we will sit here until midnight. I really apologise. I completely get your point, but we have a back and forth of opinions and of political positions. It's the line of Parliament in general, and in this debate all the more.
