Hong Kong, notably the case of Apple Daily
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to begin by expressing my thanks to the rapporteurs: Many thanks to Miriam, to Anna, to Reinhard – and above all to you, Reinhard, for this excellent cooperation. And this excellent cooperation on the report is already the first message we are sending to China today. Parliament works together and resolutely to fight the national security law in China with the aim of restricting the public and freedoms. The forced closure of Apple Daily It has forced us to write this report together here today, not because we wanted to, but because the Communist Party is calling on us to do so. This resolution contains targeted sanctions against the Communist Party, which is very important, namely the lifeboat policy for Hong Kongers who are afraid in Hong Kong, but also the clear call to no longer extradite people from the European Union to China. And what was very important to me was the political diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Games. We must not make ourselves the symbol of the Communists here and, in my view, we must not travel to China either. And I wish our Olympic competitors from the European Union every success in the Games. Hopefully, we are united and determined here in the House today and will send a big signal to China. We can now also let our words be followed by actions. It is extremely important that we show the Communist Party: There are limits, and they are reached with us here. We will not stop talking about these issues here in this House as long as the Hong Kong people have to fight for their freedom.
