Presentation of the programme of activities of the Belgian Presidency (debate)
Dear Chairman, Prime Minister, colleagues. The Belgian presidency concludes Europe's institutional cycle ahead of the European elections at crucial moments for our continent and for the lives of Europeans. We are about to formalise a historic agreement on migration and asylum, finally taking a responsible, civilisational and common-sense approach to one of Europe's key challenges. If we want to remain the best place to live in the world, Europe needs to take investment in its security, defence and competitiveness more seriously. We need a serious revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework, not least because of the importance of helping Ukraine. Do not neglect, too, the engagement with Bosnia and Herzegovina and our immediate neighbours in the southeast of Europe. The European elections are approaching and will set the course for Europe in the turbulent times ahead of us. In this context, I wish the Belgian Presidency success and I wish every good thing in a demanding six months.
