Mr President, dear colleagues, it's good that we're here all this together to condemn discrimination, unjust imprisonment or, of course, the death penalty. But in order to be credible, I want to address an oddity here, because many of you claim concerns for the right of a religious minority, which is discriminated against or unrecognised in many Middle Eastern countries – Qatar, Yemen, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and so on. But the only place where this discrimination or the fate of this group interests you seems to be Iran. That's odd, because is discrimination only bad when it happens in a country whose government you don't like? When the discrimination is perpetrated by countries you consider allies, strategic partners, there is no problem. Let us be honest: I don't think your concern with human rights is very sincere. Otherwise, you wouldn't let your buddies violate the human rights of the same minority you claim to defend right now. I also think that we need to be clear that Europe itself is violating human rights in Iran right now. Western sanctions massively violate the fundamental rights of the Iranian people every day – all Iranians. They even limit access to cancer medicines – cancer! Sanctions kill. Yet many of you propose to strengthen them. This is not about human rights. This is an instrumentalisation of human rights that are so important and that takes away credibility from the action of Europe on human rights. If we want to promote human rights sincerely, then we need to start by lifting sanctions and allowing the Iranian people to choose their destiny and to build the country they want.

I wondered why. And in fact, there is consistency. When we saw that Rwanda supported the looting of the Congo, we made an agreement with Rwanda. When we saw that the Israelis were going to steal gas from the Palestinians, we made an agreement with the Israelis. Today, we support, we work with those who want to steal the gold, the oil of Sudan. In fact, you like to talk about human rights, but European politics today is based on economic plunder that doesn't care about human rights. And that has to change.

Renewing the EU-Africa Partnership: building common priorities ahead of the Angola Summit (debate)

Mr President, Commissioner, for decades Europe has been Africa's main partner. European leaders after European leaders have made great promises: Africans have been promised peace, they have seen war, they have been promised prosperity, they have seen poverty and they have seen underdevelopment. For years, we have imposed unfair economic agreements and neoliberal reforms on Africans with great promises, once again. What is the net result today? African economies remain heavily dependent on the export of raw materials – 75% of their exports –, every year Africa loses €76 billion through capital flight and tax evasion, and when they arrive in Europe, even with all their papers and passports in order, Africans still risk being humiliated and sent back to airports. Then you come and whine and say: "Ah yes, but the Africans they're going to see the Chinese." Well yes, that's normal. Africans tell us: "They offer us a better deal, they respect us." Don't whine, you whine, because you still want their resources and wealth. Let's change course. Let's stop despising Africans, stop seeing only their wealth as a source of looting and start, let's launch fair trade and a partnership of equals.

Intergenerational fairness in Europe on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons (debate)

But you are not saying that it is an average and that, therefore, many people, especially with difficult jobs, will never succeed. And besides, you don't say what your own site says: Healthy life expectancy is only 62-63 years. This means that from the age of 62 to 63, things are no longer going well. And what is your conclusion then? It's always the same song: People need to work longer. This is what the European Commission comes up with every time. Up to seventy years, the Commission once suggested. In Belgium, your philosophy also has supporters. The government now wants to force everyone to work up to 67. To impose that, she even wants to take away 5% of people's pensions, for every year they would quit before the age of 67. That's theft! That's pension theft, because people worked for that pension. That's their right. And that while retirement in Belgium today is often not even sufficient for a room in a retirement home. That is the concrete situation at the moment. One third of women who are now newly retired are even below the poverty line. I often hear that we no longer know how to finance pensions. It's weird, when it comes to weapons, I never hear that argument. Never. And in Belgium, we did the calculation: expenditure on pensions and pensions would increase by around 2% of GDP by 2070, or 2% spread over half a century. This must be feasible. If it were for weapons and tanks, you'd have found the money by now. Commissioner, it is not feasible for many people to work until the age of 67. A housekeeper, a nurse, someone in construction, they just can't. They're up, they don't have a parliamentary job. As a reminder: Pensions are not a luxury, pensions are a right! Hence all the support for the trade union mobilization in Belgium on 14 October and throughout Europe for the fight for our pension.

It would be like gathering three times the population of Charleroi or three times the population of Liège in a camp. The ultimate goal, in the Israelis’ own words, would be to actually see the expulsion, emigration, deportation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Israel is thus openly reconnecting with the worst pages in the history of European colonialism. Let us no longer have all these delays, let us have a little bit of quality railways, punctual railways, and then schools! Hospitals! We can invest so that our children are no longer in smaller classrooms, in old buildings, and that there are no waiting lists in hospitals either! We can put money in there! We can isolate houses massively, so that our bills go down!" With the money from this big investment bank, we could do a lot of things. But what is your priority, colleagues? Give that money to the war. Institutional and political implications of the EU enlargement process and global challenges (debate)

Mr President, Commissioner, when I hear you talk about the enlargement of the European Union, it sounds nice as an idea, but I think you are passing a little quickly on the real consequences that this can have on workers. Because the minimum wage in Ukraine does not come to 200 euros, I think, in Moldova, it is a little more than 300 euros. In the context of the current rules of the European market, which does not even guarantee that today a worker who goes to work in another Member State is entitled to the same rules of protection, to the same social security as another, what will happen in the context of an enlargement? Quite simply, companies – indeed, there are quite a few so-called letterbox companies – will take advantage of this to bring down, to make working conditions worse for workers across Europe. And that would be the concrete impact in Europe today of enlargement for workers. Don't hide that, don't dream of greatness about how beautiful Europe will be to 200 states. That's not what the workers are going through. The workers now want you to change this Europe; no longer competition, but cooperation, social security.
