Consequences of drought, fire, and other extreme weather phenomena: increasing EU's efforts to fight climate change (debate)
Drought, fires, extreme weather events. Problems that are becoming more recurrent, such as the discussions we have here on this subject, guided by vain intentions and the absence of concrete measures for these problems. Water policy, which must remain in the public domain, cannot be placed only in times of drought. Structural measures, investment in strengthening water storage capacity are needed to ensure the supply of human consumption and the development of economic, agricultural and industrial activities, and support for adaptation for agricultural and livestock activities. It is necessary to prioritize the use of water in times of drought. Firefighting begins with prevention policy. A policy that must look at the root causes, the reasons for rural abandonment. A policy that requires the valorisation of small and medium-sized agriculture and its incomes, counteracting phenomena of concentration of production and replacement of agricultural production areas by monoculture, which valorises the interior with the presence of public services. The environmental problems we face are an expression of capitalism's predatory action. Responding to these problems requires fundamental changes in policies, safeguarding the interests of each people and their sovereign right to development.
