Addressing impunity through EU sanctions, including the EU Global Human Rights sanctions regime (so called “EU Magnitsky Act”)

The EU’s Magnitsky Regulation enhances targeted sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for severe human rights violations globally. Its aim is to combat impunity by freezing assets and imposing travel bans. The regulation seeks to address gaps, particularly in geographic and thematic imbalances of listed entries. Future expansions may include corruption and transnational repression. Consistent implementation by all member states and greater transparency are key demands to improve effectiveness.
