The renewal of authorization for genetically modified NK603 maize is contested due to insufficient assessment of long-term health and environmental risks. The maize’s glyphosate resistance encourages increased use of the herbicide, raising concerns about biodiversity and public health. While EFSA found no new risks, independent research and the EU’s precautionary principle highlight unresolved cumulative effects. Politically, the opposition aims to address democratic deficits in GMO approval processes and ensure fair competition for EU farmers. A reform of the authorization procedure is demanded to better integrate scientific uncertainties and public objections.
