The renewal of authorization for genetically modified MON 88302 rapeseed is contested due to environmental and health concerns. The glyphosate tolerance of the crop and its potential impact on biodiversity and ecosystems are key issues. While EFSA found no new hazards, long-term effects and cumulative risks were not sufficiently assessed. The Parliament criticizes inadequate monitoring plans and demands adherence to the precautionary principle. Additionally, a reform of the GMO approval process is called for to address democratic shortcomings.
