The need to reduce work-related fatalities (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, work is not just a place to earn a living; Sometimes it's a place where you lose it. Never get used to the fact that some people go to work in the morning and never go home again. The resolution mentions – and I would like to welcome – our firefighters and law enforcement officers who suffer hatred and violence by rendering the noblest of services: to save and protect lives. This should not be seen as a risk of the trade, but as acts that are always intolerable and must be punished accordingly. The proposal for commemoration and awareness days is commendable. However, the date of August 8 will not make it possible to draw the expected success. There was already the date of the ILO, that of 28 April. Why do we want this event to be absolutely linked to the institutions of the European Union and to focus on the symbolic aspect rather than effective and real support? The issue is too serious to be diverted to a Union power play against national legislation and workers' rights. Prevention and safety contribute to the qualification of workers. There are funds, including the ESF, to support our skills. So support these initiatives with the means at our disposal.
