Political repression and humanitarian situation in Cuba (debate)
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the humanitarian crisis in Cuba has different and deep roots, but we must be clear, Madam High Representative: The US administration's tight grip does not liberate Cubans, condemns them to hunger and insecurity with the tightening of the embargo until the blockade of oil supplies, secondary sanctions, which also affect European companies, and the constant threat of military action. Trump doesn't want democracy in Cuba, he wants Cuba. We can't be his accomplices. It is instead the dialogue with the Cuban government and civil society that produces concrete results, as confirmed by the recent liberations of political opponents mediated by the Holy See. We therefore strongly call on Havana to ensure respect for human rights and the free access of international observers, and we call on the Union – ourselves – to keep the dialogue with Cuba open in the interest of its people. Dialogue is not weakness: This is Europe's true method.
