Housing crisis in the European Union with the aim of proposing solutions for decent, sustainable and affordable housing (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, this year and a half the Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union has done an extraordinary job of analysing all aspects of the housing crisis in Europe, but also of understanding the expectations of our European citizens. We all agree on one principle: on housing there is no one-size-fits-all solution for all Member States, but the needs of large northern cities differ from mountainous areas, inland areas, island areas, where the theme of housing is intertwined with depopulation and, above all, with the social well-being of the communities themselves. In this report we have pushed on two key points: the simplification of the regulatory framework and decisive tax relief measures such as, for example, the reduction of VAT. This is a measure that the Italian delegation of the EPP and Forza Italia wanted. Today, more than ever, we need to free up new resources, stimulate private initiative for a new pact between the market and public institutions. We have done our part: it is now up to the Commission to give concrete and effective answers.
