Situation in Lebanon: implementation of the ceasefire, support peace efforts and humanitarian access (debate)
Mr President, this is the fifth time since 1978 that Israel intervenes in Lebanon. What is exactly the final scope of this continuous interest in controlling Lebanon? The explanation is to find in the text of the current negotiation between the two states. Israel has asked the government of Lebanon, as a condition, to disarm Hezbollah, while maintaining for itself the right to take all needed measures of self‑defence at any time against any attack in Lebanese territory. The fact is that Israel and the US have this old obsession from both countries to make Lebanon a protectorate, leaving in the hands of the Beirut government the ruling of the population, while keeping in its own hand the security from where to control the land, the Middle East. Yet, Lebanon isn't a part of Israeli territory; Lebanon is an independent state with a strong relationship with Europe and, particularly, France. Europe is also deeply involved in defending the peace in Lebanon with the long‑term mission UNIFIL deployed at the border of Lebanon and Israel. The killing of two French soldiers by the Israeli army is obviously a provocation to send a message to all of us in this sense.
