Recent proposals to fight poverty in the EU (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, as long as there is ignorance and misery on earth, books like this will not be useless. The Miserables. Victor Hugo understood that misery explains too much, but it doesn't explain everything. On The Miserables, No one is reduced to their misery. When Bishop Myriel welcomes Jean Valjean, he doesn't just offer him a roof and sheets: Give him back the reins of his destiny. When Fantine loses himself in degradation, he is not judged as moral failure, but revealed as the victim of a society incapable of protecting the most vulnerable. Poverty can mark a life, but it should not condemn it. You can even open it, but you shouldn't finish it. This is why we belong to a social right: It is the guardian of a millennial moral tradition that has taught us that dignity requires protection, but also emancipation. Millions of human beings challenge us from the depths of their need and from the heights of their dignity. They are the inspiration and raison d'être of our existence and our mission, which is no less than that of Victor Hugo in his time.
