Political repression and humanitarian situation in Cuba (debate)
Madam President, the Castro regime has its days numbered. The process for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in Cuba will come sooner rather than later, and the European Union has a moral and political obligation to contribute to its realization, avoiding looking the other way. That contribution necessarily involves the demand that this Parliament suspend the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement and the demand that the Castro Government immediately initiate a process of democratic transition that necessarily entails, in the first place, the freedom of political prisoners, national reunification after decades of exile of millions of Cubans, the demilitarization of the Government and, of course, the development of an inclusive project that guarantees the free exercise of fundamental rights and public freedoms in Cuba. And, all this, to lead to free and democratic elections that symbolize the return to the Cuban people of their freedom, their democracy and their sovereignty, which for so many years has been taken from them.
