Droughts and extreme weather events as a threat to local communities and EU agriculture in times of climate change (debate)
Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as droughts, heat waves and floods. These events represent a growing threat to local communities and the agricultural sector across the Union, severely affecting food production, water resources and the livelihoods of millions of citizens. Agriculture is one of the sectors most vulnerable to droughts and extreme events. Water scarcity and heat stress on crops and livestock, as well as the destruction of agricultural infrastructure, are jeopardising food security and the sustainability of the sector, which are key to the economy and well-being of Europe’s rural areas. Within this framework, rural communities, which rely heavily on agriculture and natural resources, are most affected. We Socialists call for exploring solutions that protect these communities and farmers from climate challenges, while allowing for an ambitious approach to climate change. Finding solutions to the impact of climate change on agriculture and local communities is crucial for the just and sustainable transition, ensuring that the most vulnerable sectors are not left behind.
