Presentation of the Fertilisers Action Plan (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, the issue of fertilisers has become a major strategic issue for Europe, because behind fertilisers there is our food sovereignty, our energy independence and the future of our agriculture. The tensions in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remind us of a very simple truth: Dependence is vulnerability. In 2022, soaring fertiliser prices almost forced entire farms to fold. These are the same farmers who are now suffering the consequences of an addiction that you yourself have chosen. Concrete solutions exist. LNG carriers make it possible to use agricultural residues to produce digestate, a local and renewable fertilizer. A few European companies are still resisting. They maintain a fertilizer industry despite rising costs and regulations that discourage more than it supports. Let us preserve them and strengthen them, because if they disappear, we will have nothing left to save. But Europe is accumulating mistakes: Farm to Fork has weakened our production without a viable alternative, Mercosur opens our markets to productions that do not meet our standards or our environmental requirements. The Commission itself acknowledges this by creating omnibuses to correct its own mistakes. On nuclear power, she finally admitted that she needed it. In ten years' time, will it take an agricultural omnibus to repair the mistakes made today with the CAP and fertilizers?
