Need for an adaptation of the EU legal framework on sustainable biofuels (debate)
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the EU legal framework for sustainable biofuels needs to be revised to better guarantee the energy sovereignty of our Member States. We measure the need for this adaptation by looking at the situation in the French departments of America: Guadeloupe and Martinique. Since 2011, these outermost regions have been confronted with strandings of sargassum algae polluting the coasts, releasing toxic gases, damaging the environment, fishing and tourism, not to mention their impact on the budget of local authorities. Each year, 300 000 tonnes of sargassum accumulate on the coast of the West Indies. This biomass, which is now suffering as a calamity, must and can become a resource. Sargassum constitutes a vast potential for the production of sustainable biofuels, provided that the European Union allows their recovery. On behalf of the Patriotes pour l’Europe (Patriots for Europe) and as a Member concerned about the development of the overseas territories, I therefore call for the creation of a specific framework favourable to this enhancement of the Sargassums.
