EU enlargement strategy (debate)
Mr President, enlargement of the European Union is about the future of the European project. It is about how we perceive the completion of European integration. It is therefore a tool for peace, stability and cooperation, especially in regions that for decades have experienced tensions and divisions. Greece has long supported enlargement, particularly with regard to the European perspective of the Western Balkans. But enlargement without deepening cannot and cannot go against the fundamental principles of our Union. For Greece, therefore, any attempt to abandon the principle of unanimity in enlargement decisions is a red line. However, in the report that we are called upon to vote on today, there are petitions proposing a move from unanimity to qualified majority voting. Such a development finds us radically opposed. Enlargement must be the result of consensus and each Member State must have a voice and meaningful participation in the process. Only in this way will we ensure a strong, united and credible European Union.
