Need for an adaptation of the EU legal framework on sustainable biofuels (debate)
Mr President! Commissioner! Dear colleagues, I have bad news for you: The land mass on this planet is limited. And the land that we humans have already repurposed for our purposes is breaking the ecological boundaries that ensure our survival. This is not an individual opinion of mine, it is based on satellite images and scientific findings. But it is also clear: We need to get out of fossil fuels. And in order to cope with this situation, we should take a look at figures, data and facts. At best, one hectare of land provides 4,000 litres of biofuel, equivalent to 40 megawatt-hours of energy. The same hectare provides 700 megawatt-hours of electricity when PV is added, almost 20 times as much. Yes, we will also need biofuels – for shipping, for air transport – but it would be fatal if we were to create disincentives that channel investment into non-scalable projects. Therefore: Take science seriously. Set standards that correspond to reality!
