Situation in Lebanon: implementation of the ceasefire, support peace efforts and humanitarian access (debate)
Mr President! The civilian population in Lebanon is suffering, and – for the enemies of humanity on the right-hand side of the house – not just the Christian ones! We are talking about two and a half thousand dead since March. One and a half million people who had to leave their homes. From people living in shelters, with families or on the streets of Beirut without knowing if they can ever return. They live with the daily fear of attacks, with drones over their heads and a ceasefire that is repeatedly broken by both Israel and Hezbollah. For this reason, there must be a clear sign from this House: The protection of civilians is a duty under international law for all sides. The EU must therefore take action, step up diplomatic initiatives, examine sanctions for breaches of international law and clearly condemn the establishment of a so-called security zone in southern Lebanon. Above all, however, one thing is urgently needed now: a ceasefire that deserves this name – comprehensively and reliably.
