The multiannual plan for the Baltic Sea and ways forward (debate)
Mr President! Ladies and Gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, My colleagues! If you live on the Baltic Sea like me, you can't help but worry. The Baltic Sea is in critical condition. Fish stocks are under pressure. The coastal communities are fighting for their future. And confidence in the long-term development of the region needs to be maintained as a matter of urgency. That is why – yes, we need urgent, coordinated and pragmatic action. I should like to expressly acknowledge that the report as it stands today is different from what it has been received. We have made compromises and, as I said, I want to expressly acknowledge that the rapporteur has also adopted conservative positions and that we have made an effort to find a report that we can stand behind. In this sense, such a report must send an important political signal, namely that the protection of the Baltic Sea and the preservation of viable coastal regions must go hand in hand. Of course, as is the case with compromises, we are not satisfied with some things. We would have liked more emphasis to be placed on the importance and role of fisheries. It is not only a real treasure for us in terms of cultural history, but also in terms of tourism policy and in many other respects extremely important for us on the Baltic Sea. But positively, for example, that we, unlike in the past, I take the Maritime Action Plan, Say very clearly: We want to find solutions with the coastal regions, with the fishermen. It is extremely important that we take the people who live with and from the Baltic Sea with us. The role of the predators is named. I know this is not an easy situation for someone who comes from conservation. But I think that was extremely necessary. And that's why, ladies and gentlemen: Fishing must be part of the solution. She wants to be. I'm just going to be back at a restocking event this weekend, which of course will be carried out by whom? From the fishermen. Of those who now also work very well with the science that has the information. By the way, I explicitly take recreational fishing on board. We need to take these people with us; They are part of the solution. And that is why our fisheries in the Baltic Sea deserve every help, including from us as the European Union.
